محسن جاسم الموسوي، هو كاتب وروائي وناقد عراقي.
وهو أستاذ الأدب العربي في جامعة كلومبيا و الجامعة الأمريكية في الشارقة.
وهو باحث وناقد على المستوى الدولي وله خبرة أكثر من 20 عام في التدريس في عدد من المؤسسات التعليمية في الشرق الأوسط.
وهو وله 24 كتاب (بما في ذلك أربع روايات) وأكثر من 60 في المقالات العلمية تعتبر دراسات محسن الموسوي عن ألف ليلة وليلة من أهم الدراست البحثية التي بدأت بها حياته الأدبية.
وكانت البداية بالطبع أطروحة الدكتوراه التي حصل عليها من جامعة دالهوزي الكندية سنة 1978 عن ألف ليلة وليلة في نظرية الأدب الإنجليزي.
وهي البداية التي فتحت شهيته عند نشرها مترجمة سنة 1982 ، خصوصا بعد حماسة الاستقبال لها، الى المضي في الطريق نفسه ، فنشر كتاب "ثارات شهرزاد" عن فن السرد العربي الحديث عن دار الآداب البيروتية سنة 1992 ، كما نشر كتابه "مجتمع ألف ليلة وليلة" الذي هو قراءة في الملفوظ الشهرزادي ومقارباته الفكرية والاجتماعية، وصدر عن دار الشروق القاهرية في العام نفسه الذي صدر كتابه "سرديات العصر العربي الوسيط" عن دار الآداب البيروتية.
وتنوعت بعد ذلك أعمال محسن الموسوي ، فكتب: تولدات النص، وعن أسئلة الثقافة، وعن نزعة الحداثة في القصة العراقية، وعن عصر الرواية، وعن الرواية بعد محفوظ، ولكنه لم ينج تماما من سحر ألف ليلة، فدائرة القص هي الدائرة التي تجذبه إليها ليستغرق في تأمل عوالم السرد التي تنطوي عليها، ويبدو أن عدوى شهرزاد انتقلت إليه فكتب روايات أربع فيما أعرف، أولاها "العقدة" التي نشرت في القاهرة سنة 1978 ، وثانيتها "درب الزعفران" التي نشرها سنة 1990، وثالثتها "أوتار القصب"، وأخيرا "دون سائر الناس

هذه الدراسة الموسَّعة للذاكرة الشعبية وفنون المحكي ومروياته وألف ليلة وليلة هي الأولى التي تتّصف بالشمولية والتقصي لمصادر المروي، وألف ليلة وليلة تحديداً، بأغلب أصولها في التواريخ وكتب المحاسن والفضائل والتطفيل والتماجن.
وعدا ما تشتمل عليه من تفصيل واسع في حياة الأمصار والمدن والأسواق وسلوك الجماعات وحياة النساء والجواري والرجال بأصنافهم وإلمامها بالظواهر الغلامية والغلمانية، فإنها تعرِض للسَّرد وفنونه وأساليبه كما لم يتحقَّق من قبل في أية دراسة عربية أو أجنبية.
والكتاب بعنايته بالمادة العربية أولاً وأساساً يُعيد التوازن إلى الإتجاهات التي قامَت دراسةً ونقداً على ألف ليلة وليلة مترجمة ومنقولة، بكلِّ ما يعنيه ذلك من تباعدٍ عن مستويات اللغة والحوار والمعجم التي يمكن أن تضيع عبر هذه الوساطة، أي وساطة الترجمة والتكييف والإعداد والإختزال.
