لا تزال التربية الخاصة تحظى باهتمام كبير في المجتمعات الإنسانية المعاصرة. فالمجلات والمؤلفات والمؤتمرات العلمية، والبرامج الجامعية المصممة لإعداد معلمي التربية الخاصة، والتشريعات والسياسات التربوية الأكثر إنصافاً وعدالة، والمنظمات والمؤسسات والمدارس التي تعنى بتعليم وتأهيل الأطفال والشباب ذوي الإعاقة كلها إلى ازدياد بشكل مضطرد ليس في الدول المتقدمة فقد وإنما في الدول القل نمواً أيضاً.
لكن المكتبة العربية لا تزال فقيرة في الكتب المرجعية في مجال التربية الخاصة. لذلك يأتي هذا الكتاب لتوضيح أسس تعليم الأطفال والشباب ذوي الإعاقة من جهة والموهوبين من جهة أخرى. وقد حرصت فيه على توخّي الوضوح والإيجاز في العرض والأخذ بالدقة والتوثيق والحداثة في المفاهيم والأساليب.
ويقع الكتاب في ثلاثة ابواب تتضمن خمسة عشر فصلاً. الباب الأول عنوانه "الأسس المفاهيمية والتاريخية للتربية الخاصة" ويتناول مفاهيم اساسية في التربية الخاصة والأسس التاريخية للتربية الخاصة. ويوضح الباب الثاني الفئات العشر التي تقدم لها خدمات التربية الخاصة والخدمات الداعمة وهي: الإعاقة العقلية، والإعاقة الجسمية، وصعوبات التعلّم، والإعاقة السمعية، والإعاقة البصرية، والإضطرابات السلوكية والإنفعالية، واضطرابات التواصل، واضطراب ضعف الإنتباه والنشاط الزائد، واضطراب الطيف التوحدي، والموهبة والتفوق. وأما الباب الثالث فهو يناقش الأسس القانونية، والمهنية، والبحثية للتربية الخاصة.
