اللغة وعاء العلم، وأداة التفاهم، ومرتكز العقد، تتصل بالمجتمع الإنساني إتصالاً وثيقاً، فتؤثر فيه وتتأثر بمعطياته.
ماهيتها: مجموعة من الأصوات الكلامية، تمثل في جوانبها الإئتلافية مسارات اللغة العملية، وتعكس أنشطة الأفعال القصدية الغرضية للإنسان.
إن لكل أمة متجهاً واضح المعالم في الصياغة اللفظية للوحدات اللغوية، يمثل احتياجاتها في الجوانب المادية والعنوية.
وعلم الأصوات اللغوية ومادته الأساسية الصوت الإنساني، الذي يشكل جزئيات ومفردات اللغة. هذا العلم الذي يهتم بدراسة هذه الأصوات دراسة نظرية وعملية، اعتمدت في وهلتها الأولى الملاحظة الذاتية، والتقييد المباشر، ممتزجة مع العلوم الأخرى، قصد الإفادة من معطياتها في ميادينها التحليلية. ثم كانت المختبرات والمعامل الصوتية التي خطت بهذه الدراسات خطوات متقدمة في ميدان الدرس العلمي.
ويمثل كتاب الأصوات اللغوية مرجعاً بين يدي طلاب الدراسات الأولية في كليتي العلوم التربوية والآداب، وطلبة الدراسات العليا، في ميدان الدرس الصوتي العربي القديم والحديث.
وقع الكتاب في مقدمة وسبعة فصول، وخُصصت الفصول الأربعة الأولى لدراسة علم الأصوات النطقي، وعلم الأصوات الفيزيائي، وعلم الأصوات السمعي، وعلم الأصوات التجريبي. أما الفصل الخامس فكان دراسة للتوزيع الإنتاجي للأصوات العربية، الفونيمات التركيبية، الأصوات الصامتة والصائتة، والفونيمات فوق التركيبية: المقطع، والنبر والتنغيم.
أما الفصل السادس فقد خصص لدراسة القوانين والصفات الصوتية والظواهر الوظائفية. وخُصص الفصل السابع لدراسة لغة الأطفال والنمو الصوتي، حيث وقع في مبحثين. كان الأول لنظريات الإكتساب اللغوي، والثاني لمراحل البناء اللغوي.
