إن مادة "علم المنطق"، من المواد الدراسية الحوزوية، التي تدرَّس في مرحلة المقدمات، وعادة الحوزات درجت على أن يدرس الطالب كتاباً أولياً مختصراً، ثم يتبعه بكتاب مطول؛ وخلال الفترات الزمنية المتعددة، كان يدرس في كل مرحلة مقرراً يختلف عن غيره.
وفي هذا السياق كتب العديدون في مجال المنطق، ولكتاباتهم فوائد علمية كثيرة، ولكن لم نلحظ فيما كتب وجود كتاب "تدريسي" بما للكلمة من معنى، حيث إن العمق في الكتابة، أو ما شابه؛ لا يشكل سبباً كافياً لجعل الكتاب تدريسي.
هذا الأمر دعى المؤلف لكتابة هذا المختصر في المنطق "الوجيز في المنطق" ليتبعه بعد ذلك بكتابين "الوسيط في المنطق" و "الوسيع في المنطق"، وبذلك تكتمل حلقات الكتب الدراسية لهذه المادة، وذلك ضرورة تحديث وتطوير المناهج التعليمية الحوزوية، من ناحية، ومن ناحية ثانية بهدف إيجاد سلسلة يتدرج فيها الطالب من كتاب لآخر، بخلاف ما هو موجود حالياً في عملية الإنتقال من مصنف لآخر، فقد يدرس الطالب كتاباً، ومؤلفه لم يعده للتدريس، وأما هذا الكتاب فهو أعد للتدريس في الحوزة العلمية.
