في هذا الكتاب يتوصل الكاتب إلى حقيقة مفادها أن الأسباب التي قضت بصدور مبدأ التعددية كانت استثنائية لتعالج معضلات اجتماعية واجهت المجتمع في تللك الفترة. واذ تولدت من جديد تلك المعضلات عاد حكم التعددية لامتصاص تلك الظاهرة. وهذا ينطبق على الصعيد العام المتعلق بالمجتمع الإسلامي وبشكل عام. أما على صعيد الفرد المسلم فيجوز للقاضي الشرعي نفسه وأن يسمح له بالزواج من زوجة أخرى وقياسا على هذا الحكم المتعلق بالاستثناء على الصعيد العام. أما السماح بالزواج من الإماء من ملك اليمين فكان استثنائيا هو أيضا, وأما الأصل فيه في التعليم اللإسلامي فتحريمه إذ لا يجوز في نظر الإسلام استبعاد الإنسان للإنسان, وإن هذا الاستثناء من باب معاملة أعداء المسلمين بمثل ما كانوا يعاملون به أسراهم من المسلمين.
