لقد توطدت شهرة هذا الكتاب في المجالات التربوية على أنه يقدم نظرية جديدة في أساليب التعليم وبخاصة تعليم الكبار، ولكن المؤلف يحدد فيه المعالم الرئيسية في فلسفة الثورة، الثورة التي تستهدف تحرير الإنسان وتوجيه طاقاته نحو تغيير العالم الذي يعيش فيه.
لقد تحدث باولو فرايري في كتابه عن الثورة كعمل يمارسه المقهورون من أجل تجاوز ظروف القهر واكتساب حريتهم وهم في هذه الممارسة يواجهون القاهرين الذين لا يريدون لهم أن يتحرروا بل يريدون لهم أن يستبطنو ظروف القهر ويعتبروها قدراً لا يمكن رده.
ويرى "باولو فرايري" أن الثورة بهذا المفهوم ليست محنة يقدمها القادة للأفراد ذلك أن الأفراد إن لم يبدءوا تحرير أنفسهم بأنفسهم في عمل تضامني، فلن يمكن للقيادة أن تحررهم، وهو لا ينكر بذلك أهمية الدور الذي تقوم به القيادة الثورة في العمل الثوري، فللقادة في نظره دور هام في توجيه الجماهير للإحساس بظروف القهر، غير أن القيادة التي تحاول أن تفرض رؤيتها وفكرها على الناس دون أن تشاركهم فكرهم محكوم عليها بالفشل لأنها في حقيقتها ليست قيادة ثورية وإنما هي بديل متسلط يحل محل القاهرين ويفتقر إلى الثقة الجماهيرية.
تلك هي الفكرة الرئيسية في كتاب "باولو فرايري" غير أن روعة الكتاب تتجلى في نقده "لمفهوم التعليم البنكي" وهو التعليم الذي نمارسه في مدارسنا وفي جامعاتنا ولا نستهدف منه سوى السيطرة على عقول الطلاب بجعلها بنوكاً نحزن فيها ودائعنا المعرفية من أجل استلابهم، وتتجلى أيضاً في تحديده للوسائل التي يكرس بها القاهرون والقهر وهي الاستغلال والغزو الثقافي والاستلاب، كما تتجلى في توضيحه للطريقة التي يتعلم بها المقهورون كيف يتجاوزون ظروف قهرهم.
