بعد كتاب بنى السرد الحكائي في الأدب الشعبي الذي ظهر من ضمن سلسلة الثقافة الشعبية العربية، يظهر هذا الكتاب الذي يتناول الأدب الشعبي المُقال شعراً، ومن ثم المدوّن، زجلاً كان أو قصائد بالعامية، أو أغان إما كُتبت لتغنّى، أو انتقيت من كلام شعري مكتوب يستحق أن يغنّى وأن يطرب لسماعه السامعون.
لقد حاول الكاتب في هذا الكتاب أن يبين أهمية التراث الشعبي الذي لا تزال الذاكرة الشعبية تحفظه وتردده في أوقات فرحها كما في أوقات حزنها، في أوقات إستقبال المواليد، وفي أوقات أعراس من بلغ منهم عمر الزواج، وفي لحظات توديعهم إلى مثواهم الاخير في دورة حياتية متكاملة لحظ دورتها الناس منذ بدايات تفتحهم على الحياة، ومنذ ملاحظاتهم المبكرة التي أملت عليهم تدبير شؤون حياتهم حسب ما يجربون ويستنتجون.
هذا التوجه في البحث فرض عقد الفصول التالية: الفصل الأول: يتناول أهمية القول بالعامية، وأصله وفصله، ويبحث الفصل الثاني في كيفية تناول الشعر الشعبي، وخصوصاً الزجل، من إعتباره تراثاً شعبياً في متناول كل المجتمعات الإنسانية، ويتناول الفصلان الثالث والرابع، الزجل في أنواعه وفنونه، ويتناول الفصل الخامس المغنّى من الشعر الزجلي، وهي الأغاني المبنيّة على الأوزان الزجلية، أما الفصل السادس فيتناول العلاقة بين الزجل والشعر بالعامية علماً أنهما من أرومة واحدة.
فكان هذا الكتاب، جادة للإطلاع على تراثنا الشعبي، ليس فقط من أجل الدعوة إلى المحافظة عليه؛ بل أيضاً من أجل التوغل في عمق بنيتنا الذهنية الشعبية، للتعرّف على ما يشكل لحمتها وسداها؛ لأن السلوك العفوي والتصرف في الطريقة غير المفكّر فيها هما اللذان يُظهران منابع فكرنا وأصول نظرتنا إلى الحياة.
