لم تأتِ المعتقدات من فراغ ، ولا هبطت من فوق . فهي وليدة حياة الجماعة وأحوال المجتمع . لذلك جاءت بما تتطلبه حياة هؤلاء ، وبما يمكن أن تقدمه لخدمة هذه المعتقدات . ولكي تقوم بهذه المهام ، لا بد من أن تتحوّل إلى أفعال وممارسات تبغي المحافظة على هذه المعتقدات ، وعلى ما يمكن أن تؤشر عليه في النظر إلى القوى المنظورة التي لها السلطة والتأثير على مجرى حياة الجماعة . فكانت المعتقدات هي الإ يمان بقدرة هذه القوى على الفعل والتأثير ، وبالتالي لا بد من احترامها وتبجيلها ، بالولاء الكلّي ، والعمل على مرضاتها بكل ما يمكن أن يشكّل بالنسبة إليها ، الطريق المنجّية من الغضب والقلق والخوف والموت .
لذلك ، لا خوف على مصير المعتقدات ، طالما الإنسان ينشأ ويتربى ويتزوج ويموت متّبعاً في ذلك خطوات رئيسة في حياته ، مبنيّة على معتقدات راسخة ، إن كان في الولادة أو الزواج أو الموت . ولأنها محطات رئيسة ، فلا بد من مواجهتها بما هو مفرح ، وبما هو محزن . وذلك لا يتم إلا من خلال طقوس واحتفالات معبّرة عن تقاليد راسخة ، وبعادات متغيّرة بتغيّر الظروف والأحوال ، إن كان في الفرح أو الحزن ، إستمر ذلك منذ آلاف السنين ، وسيبقى طالما الحياة باقية والإنسان باقٍ .
