منذ أقدم العصور، ظهرت الأفكار التي تبحث في حتمية تأثير البيئة على الإنسان، وتكيف الإنسان مع ما تقدمه الطبيعة. فأدى ذلك إلى ظهور المدارس الجغرافية التي تبحث في هذا التأثير. وتضع له المبادئ والقوانين. من هذه المدارس التي أول ما ظهرت المدرسة الحتمية. إلا أن أصحاب هذه المدرسة أنفسهم يقرون بأن هذه الحتمية، وإن كانت هي التي سمحت للإنسان بالوجود، حفزته، بما قدمت من إمكانيات تتحدى عقله وتطلعاته ليتطور، واستطاعت أن تجره إلى الفعل في الطبيعة من أجل أن يخدم أغراضه ويرتقي بوجوده إلى ما هو أفضل انطلاقاً مما حصلت عليه يداه.
وهكذا بدون توقف حتى وصلت إلى ما وصلت إليه الإنسانية، بالتأكيد، دون أن تصل إلى النهاية، وحتى دون أن تفكر بأن ثمة نهاية وإن كانت دمار العالم نتيجة التقدم البشري ذاته... وهكذا خرجت المدرسة الإمكانية من رحم المدرسة الحتمية، وخرجت المدرسة الحديثة التي أخذت من هذه وتلك ما يشكل مبادئها ومنطلقاتها الأساسية.
