ولد الحجاج بن يوسف الثقفي في الطائف عامل 661م، لفت الحجاج أنظار الخليفة عبد الملك بن مروان، ورأى فيه شدة وحزما وقدرة وكفاءة، انضم الحجاج الى الجيش الاموى وأصبح من اهم فرسانه ورأس الجيش الذى ذهب لحصار ابن الزبير فى مكه ، وهنا يزعم بعض الكذابين بأن الحجاج قد ضرب الكعبة بالمنجنيق حتى هدمها
