لم ينل الحجاج بن يونس حقه من الإنصاف من قبل الكتاب والمصنفين، فقد وصفوه بكل رذيلة، وجردوه عن كل فضيلة، فانبرى مؤلف الكتاب للتحقق مما نسب إلى الحجاج وذلك من خلال عودته إلى المصادر الدينية والتاريخية والأدبية المخطوطة والمطبوعة، فكان كلما أمعن النظر فيها امتلأ قلبه بحبه والإعجاب به. فهو إذا نظر في سياسته وجده سائساً لا يخدع، ومقداماً لا تشق عصاه وخصماً يدين له الأعداد بالتسليم والإذعان، قد مثل دوراً عظيماً من أدوار حياة الأمة الإسلامية فجمع كلمتها ونظم جهادها وقرر مصيرها. وإذ بحث في إدارته وجده درعاً زاهداً، وإذ طلب منه علماً وجد الشريعة قد سلمت إليه بزمامها وألقت عنده بعصا كسيارها من جودة حفظه للقرآن الكريم والحديث الشريف إلى علم بالأحكام وإذ ما نشد فصاحة وبلاغة هاله البحر الذي لا ينضب معينه، وإذ طرق باب إصلاحاته وجده من أعظم المصلحين، وإذ نظر إلى وفائه وكرمه وإخلاصه وجده المثل الأعلى الذي يجب أن ينسج على منواله المصلحون، ويسير على هديه المجددون، فهال الباحث ما كتبه عنه المؤرخون، معولاً على أن يكون الدفاع عنه موضوع رسالته التي يضمها هذا الكتاب والتي تقدم بها لنيل شهادة العالمية من درجة أستاذ رغبه منه في وضع الأمور في نصابها، ليعطي تلك الشخصية العظيمة التي لم تعطها أقلام الكتاب والمؤرخين في القديم والحديث حقها من التقدير، جاعلاً رائدة الإنصاف في الحكم للحقيقة والتاريخ.
