كانت الكلمة أحيانا سليطة وقحة لم يسلم منها خير القادة العاملين تحت إمره الحجاج فجعلتهم ينقلبون عليه ساحطين متمردين من أمثال يريد بن المهلب والمهلب، وابن الأشعث. أما كلماته عن اهل العراق ففيها ما فيها من البذاءة.

ليت السيف والكلمة يسمحان للكلمة التي على الضفة الأخرى من القضية أن تتنفس وأن تعرض للشمس حروفها، وللنقاش قوادمها وخوافيها، إذا لغمر السلام هذه البقاع الغالية من أرض الله، ولحقن دماء أهلها التي ما برحت تنزف وتسيل في عصر يفتح فيه المستقبل ذراعيه لكل من يؤمن بالحرية والعدالة والمساواة.
