العصر المملوكي من العصور التي طالما ظلمت في تاريخ الأدب العربي، وذلك راجع إلى قلّة المختصين في هذا العصر، وإلى الأحكام غير الدقيقة التي أصدرها الباحثون عليه، وواقع الحال فيه كان على غير ما وصفوه.
فقد كان عصر إزدهار أدبي في فنون الشعر المختلفة، وفنون النثر التي استوى بعضها على سوقه، وكثر بعضها الآخر كثرة لافتة لم تكن في عصر قبله، مثل فن السير والرحلات والمنامات وتمثيليات خيال الظل وأدب العجيب والغريب والنثر التأليفي وغيرها.
ووجد فيه عدد كبير من الأدباء الذين لا نكاد نعرف عنهم شيئاً، ولم يهتم بهم الباحثون والنقاد، وهؤلاء لا يقلّون أهمية عن غيرهم من شعراء العربية في العصور السابقة لهذا العصر، ومنهم الشاعر علاء الدين الوداعي الكندي، الذي عاش بين سنوات 640هـ - 716هـ وكان له دور كبير في إزدهار الحركة الشعرية في عصره، إذ أشاد به المترجمون والنقاد، وعدّوه فحلاً من فحول شعراء عصره، بل من فحول شعراء العربية.
يأتي هذا الكتاب ليلقي ضوءاً على هذا الشاعر، وليبرز دوره في الحركة الشعرية في عصره، فهو يتناول حياته بتفاصيلها الدقيقة، ويقف على موضوعات شعرة المختلفة: الهجاء، والمديح، والنقد الإجتماعي، والغزل بالمرأة والمذكّر، ووصف الطبيعة، والخمرة، ومواكبة أحداث عصره، والشكوى.
ويدرس الخصائص الفنية لشعره، فيتحدث عن لغة الشاعر وأساليبه، وما في شعره من فنون بديعية وأثر إسلامي وتراثي، وصور شعرية، ويكشف عن دوره في تطور الحركة الشعرية والفنية في عصره.
ويحوى الكتاب ما تبقى من شعر الوداعي بعد أن استقرأها من مصادر العصر المملوكي ومظانه المختلفة، ويرتبها ترتيباً ابتثياً، ليسهل على الباحثين العودة إليها.
