يتحدث هذا المؤلَّف عن الآلهة والكائنات الأسطورية التي عرفها إنسان الشرق القديم منذ أقدم العصور، والتي اعتقد أنها تؤثر في حياته، وأظهر لها كل التقديس والتبجيل في الوثائق المكتوبة والتماثيل والمنحوتات المنصوبة.
وتمثل هذه الآلهة والكائنات الأسطورية قوى الطبيعة المختلفة التي تؤثر في حياة الإنسان كالقمر والشمس والنجوم والأرض والريح والأنهار وغيرها؛ لذلك عبدها الإنسان، وبنى لها المعابد، واحتفل بأيامٍ محددة كأعياد لها عدَّها مقدسة يجب التعبير فيها عن الشكر لتلك المعبودات، وما ازل بعضها مستمراً حتى الآن، كعيد رأس السنة، وأعياد الربيع وغيرها.
ولكن ليس الهدف من هذه الدراسة تمجيد تلك الآلهة أو المعبودات القديمة أو التفاخر لها، بل استخدامها أداة لمعرفة كيفية نشوء الفكر الديني وتطوره، وذلك بغية الوصول إلى فهمٍ أفضل للأفكار والمعتقدات المعاصرة التي يؤمن بها الإنسان، والتي هي إستمرار للكثير من الأفكار والتصورات القديمة.
فالإنسان لا يمكنه أن يفهم الحاضر دون الرجوع إلى الماضي حتى البعيد منه، وكيف يستطيع التخطيط للمستقبل تخطيطاً صحيحاً، بغية الوصول إلى حياةٍ مفعمة بالسعادة والهدوء وراحة البال.
واعتمدت هذه الدراسة في مجملها على مصادر حضارات الشرق القديم الأولى المتمثلة بالنصوص المكتوبة بلغات قديمة متعددة، وعلى أحدث الدراسات في هذا المجال من أجل إعطاء صورة واضحة عن الأفكار والمعتقدات الدينية القديمة وكيفية وصولها إلى الإنسان المعاصر.
