يعالج هذا الكتاب تاريخ بلاد الرافدين منذ بدايات نشوء الحضارة الإنسانية في عصور ما قبل الكتابة حتى عام 539 ق.م عندما سقطت بابل عاصمة الامبراطورية البابلية الحديثة بيد الملك الفارسي قورش الثاني ودخلت بالتالي بلاد الرافدين ومن ثم بلدان الشرق الأدنى القديم كلها مرحلة جديدة من تاريخها هي مرحلة الاحتلال الفارسي. وقد شهدت بلاد الرافدين خلال الفترة المذكورة التي تزيد عن ثلاثة آلاف عام تطورات عديدة في المجالات السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية والفكرية أظهر فيها الإنسان الرافدي إبداعاته الخلاقة التي انتقلت مع الزمن وانتشرت في المناطق المجاورة, ولا زال تأثير بعضها واضحاً في العديد من جوانب حياتنا المعاصرة. إن الكتابة في التاريخ القديم تشكل عبئاً ثقيلاً على كاهل المؤرخ لعدم توفر الأدوات الضرورية للبحث والكتابة, وبخاصة من حيث الحصول على المصادر والمراجع المطلوبة وقد حاول المؤلف رسم صورة أقرب ما تكون الى الواقع عن تاريخ بلاد الرافدين.
