تُجلَى فتاةٌ صغيرة إلى الريف، بينما تُمطِر سماءُ بريطانيا وابلًا من القنابل في هجومٍ مُباغت، وتكافح الفتاة لفَهمِ حياتها الجديدة في زمن الحرب. تحصل هذه الطفلة على نسخةٍ من كتاب الأساطير الاسكندنافية القديمة «أسجارد والآلهة»، فيتبدَّل عالمُها الداخلي وعالمُها الخارجي على حدٍّ سواء. تُصوِّر الكاتبة في الفصول الأخيرة من الرواية أحداثَ معركة «راجناروك»، بما فيها من مَشاهدَ داميةٍ وما يصاحبها من تغيُّراتٍ في الظواهر البيئية بأَسرِها. وفيها يخسر الآلهة المعركةَ لتكون «راجناروك» بذلك الأسطورةَ التي تُمثِّل نهاية كل الأساطير؛ فهي الأسطورة التي يَفنى فيها كلُّ الآلهة أنفُسُهم، وينتهي على أثَرها العالَم في سهلٍ مُسطَّح من الماء الأسود، إيذانًا بالتطهير والبَعث من جديد
