أصبح النفط في الوقت الحاضر أحد مقومات القوة الدولية سواء للمستهلكين أو المنتجين، وتبادل الإثنان رجحان الكفة لصالح أحدهما عبر فترة زمنية تمتد من إكتشافه وأستثماره ولغاية الوقت الحاضر، الأمر الذي يعني، أن للنفط تأثيرات إجتماعية وإقتصادية وسياسية وعسكرية وغيرها من المجالات، لما لا يدع مجالاً للشك بأن النفط هو عصب الحياة.
إن محاولة الكاتب دراسة أثر النفط على سلطنة عمان تأتي في فترة انتقل فيها مركز القوة للدول المستهلكة وبفترة تشهد ركوداً في الطلب العالمي عليه، إن التحقق من هذه الفرضية وبيان مقدار صحتها تطلب تقسيم الكتاب إلى خمسة فصول، كرس الفصل الأول لدراسة جغرافية عامة لعُمان كالواقع والمساحة والموارد الطبيعية والسكان، بينما تضمن الفصل الثاني تحليل التطور التاريخي للإمتيازات النفطية والشركات العاملة والتوزيع الجغرافي للإمتيازات والحقول النفطية، أما الفصل الثالث فقد اتجه نحو دراسة وتحليل أثر النفط على التطور السياسي لعمان لغرض بيان التنمية السياسية وبناء عمق إيجابي لإعطاء صورة حقيقية لوزن عُمان العالمي والإقتصادي، أما الفصل الرابع فقد احتوى عرض وتحليل آثار النفط في الإقتصاد العماني وتمت معالجة موضوعات هذه الفصل بأسلوب كمي (تحليل الإنحدار) مقترن بتحليل وصفي جغرافي سياسي بغية الحصول على تحديد دقيق لهذه الآثار، أما الفصل الخامس فهو رؤية مستقبلية للسلطنة.
