مع أن العلماء والباحثين في علم النفس لم يتوصلوا إلى الأسباب الحقيقية التي تجعل بعض الأشخاص قادرين على التفكير الإبداعي أكثر من غيرهم، إلا أنهم استطاعوا التوصّل إلى معرفة القدرات التي تميز المبدع والتي من أهمها الطلاقة اللفظية والفكرية ثم المرونة في التفكير ثم الأصالة وحساسية الفرد للمشكلات وقدرة تركيز الإنتباه في المشكلة.
كذلك اختلف العلماء في تحديد المراحل التي تمر بها العملية الإبداعية، ومن تلك المراحل: مراحلة الإعداد ثم مرحلة الإحتضان ثم مرحلة الإلهام ثم مرحلة التحقق والتجريب، إلا أنهم أكدوا أن ليس بالضرورة أن تمر عملية الإبداع بجميع هذه المراحل فقد ينتقل الفرد المبدع من المرحلة الأولى إلى المرحلة الأخيرة عند خلق الفكرة الإبداعية دون المرور ببقية المراحل.
أما المراحل التي تؤثر على ظهور الإبداع فيمكن تصنيفها إلى عوامل ذاتية لها علاقة بالفرد مثل القدرة العقلية العالية أو الذكاء المرتفع وقدرته على التحليل والتركيب وإيجاد العلاقات وإلى عوامل بيئية من أهمها العلاقة السائدة بين أفراد الأسرة ثم المناخ المدرسي وأساليب الإدارة في المدرسة وأساليب التعليم التي يتخذها المعلمون، وكذلك العلاقات السائدة بين أفراد المجتمع ونهل يشجع المجتمع حرية التعبير عن الرأي وهل يشجع أبناءه على الإبداع وهل يوفر مناخاً تسوده الحرية والديموقراطية الصحيحة، وهل يوفر بيئة صالحة للإنتاج والإبداع.
