هذا كتاب موسوعي جمع تراجم علماء القرن الرابع عشر الهجري الذين كانت وفياتهم ما بين سنتي (1301-1400هـ) حسب ترتيب حروف المعجم (ألفباء)، ثم ذيل بذكر الربع الأول من القرن الخامس عشر، في محاولة لاستيفاء جميع ما يتعلق بحياة المترجم من ذكر: اسمه، نسبه، كنيته، شهرته، لقبه، تاريخ ولادته، مكانها، نشأته، تلقيه العلم، شيوخه، نشاطه، مؤلفاته، أعماله مناصبه، تلاميذه، وفاته، كل ذلك حسبما جاءت به المصادر المتخصصة من ذكر لهذا العلم أو ذاك، وفي حال تفاوتت المعلومات المذكورة في المصادر تم استيعاب مجمل الأخبار المتوافرة هذا مع الإشارة إلى المصادر التي تم الاستعانة بها لكتابة الترجمة وذلك لتتاح الفرصة أمام من أراد الرجوع إلى المصدر.
وزيادة في الإيضاح فقد زين الكتاب بصور ورسوم بعض العلماء، كما حلي بذكر بعض أشعارهم، أو القصائد التي قيلت فيهم، كل ذلك باختصار. كما وذكر كنيت العلماء المشهورين بالكنية، أو اللقب، أو النسب، أو الشهرة في مكانها من الحرف الذي هو فيه.
