المنظمة ظاهرة إنسانية هادفة وواسعة الإنتشار، تتوجه لدراستها جهود علمية متعاظمة، وتنفتح آفاقها لتستوعب الإختصاصات العلمية المتزايدة، الإجتماعية، والإنسانية، والكمية، والتكنولوجية وغيرها، بسبب ترابط هذه الظاهرة بكل جوانب حياة الفرد وتجمعاته الإنسانية المتنوعة والهادفة.
وليست محاولة دراسة المنظمة بالسهلة، بسبب تفاوت المداخل والمناهج، ووجهات النظر، والمدارس الفكرية المتعددة التي كرست لبلورة وصياغة نظرية متكاملة للمنظمة، غير أن السبيل الذي انتهجه المؤلفان هو ليس طرح المدارس الفكرية وإتجاهاتها، وإنما دراسة المنظمة، بمكوناتها، وعملياتها، ونموها، وتغييرها، وذلك بالإستفادة من معطيات ونتاجات تلك المدارس.
وإنسجاماً مع ذلك، فقد قسمت هذه المحاولة المتمثلة بالكتاب، إلى أربعة أجزاء أساسية على درب دراسة نظرية المنظمة، هي: تطور نظرية المنظمة، وأوجه نشاطها (أو عملياتها) ونموها وتغييرها، وقد طرح الباب الأول، الذي شمل المدارس الفكرية الأساسية، بشكل موجز، لأن أي توسع فيه يعني خلق الإزدواج مع المدخل الأساسي الذي اختاره الباحثان والذي تبلور في الأبواب الثلاثة اللاحقة.
