ثلاثة مؤرخين سريان يروون في هذا الكتاب مشاهداتهم ومتابعاتهم للحملات الصليبية التي أكتسحت من بين ما أكتسحت من أصقاع الشرق، بلادهم ومدنهم وقراهم ودساكرهم، ويسردون بلغتهم، التي هي لهجة من اللهجات الأرامية، قصصاً وروايات عمّا جرى لتلك الأقوام القاطنة ما بين شمال بلاد الشام وأعالي بلاد ما بين النهرين، وقد وجدت نفسها بوضعها الهش وإمكانياتها الضعيفة، واقعة بين جحافل المتحاربين بعداوة وضراوة منقطعتي النظير.
ميخائيل الكبير، المؤرِّخ الرهاوي المجهول، وابن العبري، ثلاثة سريان وضعوا نصوصاً أصلية غير منشورة سابقاً، يقدّمون من خلالها رؤية مختلفة وأكثر موضوعية لمجريات الأحداث في تلك الحقبة المصيرية، وذلك من منطلق يروم إحقاق العدل وتبيان الحقيقة؛ وهي، على أية حال، سرديات تختلف من وجوه كثيرة عن الحوليات اللاتينية والبيزنطية والعربية.
كما يتطرق هؤلاء المؤرخون لحقبة تاريخية شديدة الإضطراب، دينياً ودنيوياً، وزاخرة بالشهادات عن أحداث جسام كان مسرحها تركيا وأرمينيا وسوريا وفلسطين ومصر ما بين القرن الحادي عشر والقرن الثالث عشر للميلاد؛ وهي أحداث لا تزال أصداؤها تتردد بتوتر وإنفعال شديدين في مصائر المنطقة وآراء شعوبها حتى يومنا هذا.
