يشرح هذا الكتاب تميّز أبناء الرافدين بإبداعاتهم المختلفة، فكانوا أول من اخترع العجلة وفنون إرواء المدن، وتنظيم الدولة بمعناه الواسع، وإنشاء الأنظمة الإدارية الأولى. كما كانوا السباقين في إدراج الإنسان داخل صفحات التاريخ باختراعهم الكتابة قبل حوالي 3300 سنة قبل الميلاد. وهم الذين طوّروا بكفاءة التقنيات والفنون والتجارة. لقد سنّوا وطبقوا القوانين والشرائع الأولى، ودوّنوا مبكراً الأساطير والصلوات والأشعار البطولية والغذائية. إنّهم مبتكرو علوم الفلك والتنجيم والطّب.
لقد أعاد مُنقّبو الآثار والعلماء والمؤرخون الذين عملوا من قرن ونصف بحماس بالغ، الحياة إلى الماضي الباهر لبلاد الرافدين، واكتشفوا أجزاء عديدة من الفخاريات الزخرفية والنقوش المنحوتة والأعمال الفنيّة، وفكّوا رموز الآلاف من الألواح الطينيّة المغطّاة بالكتابات المسمارية، وقرؤوا الوثائق المحفوظة، ونصوص الأشعار البطولية والغنائية.
في ذلك الزمن، زمن السومريين والأكاديين والبابليين والآشوريين، زمن بلاد الرافدين الزاهي، كانت تتموج سنابل القمح والشعير، وتتدفّق الجعّة والزيت والعسل بغزارة في ربوعها العامرة، والريح تعزف ألحانها على أوتار القيثارة الرافدية الممتدة على أزمنتها الجميلة. حينذاك كانت مغامرات الإنسان ونباتات القصب وسعف النخيل كَمِثل النيران والسنابل مع الحلم والواقع والمأساة.
