يعتبر "إحسان شرارة" أن حياة حسن الأمين الطويلة توزعت – بالإضافة إلى قريته وبيئته العاملية – بين ثلاث مدن لعبت أدوارا مميزة في السياسة والثقافة والإجتماع، هي دمشق وبغداد وبيروت، أثرت فيه وتأثر بها وبأحداثها (...) نشأ ملتزماً – متأثراً بوالده، بعقيدته الدينية، وانتسابه القومي العربي، وبقي منسجما مع نفسه حتى أيامه الأخيرة، ولم تهتز اقتناعاته بالقضية الكبرى التي آمن بها، رغم المآسي والإنكسارات التي طاولت أمته، وعمل جاهداً على إبراز الصور المشرقة في تاريخها، فنقب في خزائن محفوظاتها وكتب تاريخاً، ونظم شعراً، ونشر أدباً، وجمع تراثاً، وأخرج موسوعة".
من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب ليدرس مختلف جوانب شخصية حسن الأمين الذي تصدى لكثير من مسلمات التاريخ وناقشها وأظهر ضعفها وعدم صحتها، حتى أنه أنبتها بالوثائق والمستندات، وفتح عيوناً كثيرة على حقائق لم تكن معروفة في وقتها. أيضا يكشف الكتاب سجلاً حافلاً عن حياة حسن الأمين ووصفاً رائعاً لرحلاته وذكرياته أنّى حلّ وحيثما أقام.
