ياقوت الحموي الرومي هو علم من أعلام الفكر العربي، وأحد الأئمة البارزين في تاريخ الأدب الجغرافي عند العرب. مصنف جمع معلومات واسعة عن الحقبة المتحدة من الرابع الأخير للقرن السادس الهجري إلى نهاية الرابع الأول من القرن السابع، يوم كثرت الأسفار والرحلات، وازدادت أهمية علم الجغرافيا.
والتماساً للفائدة، خصصت هذه الدراسة لتسليط الضوء على هذا الرحالة الذي ذاعت شهرته، وانتشر صيته ليعم الأقطار، وتنوعت كتبه ومصنفاته واتسعت، لتصبح من الموسوعات البارزة في المكتبة العربية، يركن إليها الباحثون والدارسون، كلما دعت الحاجة، للاستفادة بمضمونها وغزارة مادتها.
وقد قسم هذا البحث إلى أربعة فصول في الأول صورة مفصلة للواقع التاريخى والسياسي والفكري لعصر ياقوت، وفي الفصل الثاني مراحل حياته، من نسبه ومولده ونشأته وشخصيته والتحول البارز بعد وفاة مولاه، ورحلاته المتعددة إلى المناطق العربية والإسلامية، وأبرز الشيوخ والأساتذة الذين تتلمذ على أيديهم، وتأثر بطريقتهم، وحاكى أسلوبهم في التأليف والتصنيف، إلى أهم مؤلفاته وآثاره الفكرية كما وردت في كتب التراجم والسير. وفي الثالث بعض الأبيات الشعرية المنسوبة إلى ياقوت، وما تحويه من المعاني العميقة التي تعبر بصدق عن تجربته ومعاناته، وأفرد الفصل الرابع لمعجم البلدان، ونظراً لأهميته وموقعه بين الكتب كموسوعة جغرافية وتاريخية. فبدأ بالتعريف به ثم انتقل إلى ابرز الموضوعات التي تضمنها والمصادر التي تحول عليها ياقوت في وضع هذا المعجم، والأسباب والعوامل التي دفعته إلى تأليفه، بالإضافة إلى القيم التي يعبر عنها.
