كان الجو خانقًا شديد الحرارة في عربة مترو الأنفاق، الأنفاس لاهثة، والعرق يتساقط من الوجوه والأيدي فلا يجد موضعًا على أرض العربة ليستقر فيه من تلاطم الأمواج البشرية، الكل يحلم بمحطته التي ينشدها والتي يبدو أنها لن تأتي.. وجوه مصرية بسيطة شق الزمن أخاديده في دروبها، ورؤوس صبغ العمر والشقاء منابت شعرها بلونه الأبيض، وأيادي لا تحمل سوى بعض أرغفة الخبز أو دفاتر العمل التي ينكب عليها أصحابها ليل نهار دون كلل أو مقابل سوى راتبهم القليل.. يحاول كل منهم أن يلهم جاره الصبر على ما هو فيه.. ووسط كل هذا مال رجل بسيط على جاره وقال بإيمان وتقوى: "احمدوا ربنا.. اللي عندهم تكييفات مش بيتمتعوا بيها.. بيجيلهم أمراض.. ده احنا ف نعمة"!
