هذا كتاب مهاجر ظن أن الهجرة مؤقته إلى حين إتمام الدراسة، ولكنها امتدت إلى حين الانتهاء من ممارسة المهنة، فاكتشف عندئذ أن العودة إلى البلاد الأصلية في مرحلة التقاعد مسألة معقدة كمثل الدخول إلى مأوى العجزة. هذا ليس تبريراً للهجرة، ولكنه معطى ملموس، حيث يوجد أناس غرباء في بلادهم الأصلية وآخرون غرباء في المهجر أيضاً.
ترافقك في المهجر أسئلة كثيرة، تحاول أن تجمع إجابات عنها، متغيرة ومتبدلة بمرور الوقت، انعكاساً لتعددية ذاته وانشطارها. هي إجابات تخطر ببال المهاجر عندما يتحقق من أنه لاجئ، وأن العودة هي رهن الظروف.
مهما يكن فإن المرء الذي يشرع في فرنسا في دراسة طويلة مثل الطب، ثم ينتقل إلى ممارسة المهنة فيها، لن يكون الطبيب نفسه لو تعلم ومارس في لبنان.
يحتوي هذا الكتاب على ملحوظات عن البلاد التي لا يستطيع فيها أبناء الناس العاديون، غير ذوي الامتيازات، دخول المدارس والجامعات، من ثم الانتقال إلى الحياة العملية. في الكتاب إذن، كلام عن الدولة تحت الرعاية الأجنبية، مباشرة أو بالوكالة عن المستعمر وعن سلوك السلطة هناك.
من نافلة القول إن النظام الطائفي هو الباعث الأساس على الهجرة، مثل التمييز العنصري، فهو نقيض المجتمع الوطني والدولة الوطنية. وما يزيد الطين البلة أن نظم الحكم في شبه الدولة العربية، استخدمت بلاداً كمثل لبنان، بشكل مقزز، ساحة لترحيل عيوبها، فاعتل وتضاعفت أمراضه التي سرت عدواها على شكل ثورات هدامة أقامت محاكم التفتيش حيثما فُجّرت!
