عن سعيد بن جبير قال: اجتمع أصحاب رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم) إلى سلمان الفارسي فقال يا سلمان حدثنا من التوراة بأحسن ما فيها فأنزل الله تعالى (نحن نقص عليك أحسن القصص يعني أن قصص القرآن أحسن ما في التوراة. وقيل سمى الله تعالى هذه القصة (مضة يوسف) أحسن القصص لأنها ليست من قصة في القرآن تضمن من العبد والحكم والعجائب واللطائف ما تضمنت هذه القصة ولذلك قال الله تعالى (لقد كان في يوسف وأخواته آيات للسائلين). وقال تعالى (لقد كان في قصصهم عبرة لأولي الألباب). وقيل سماها أحسن القصص بحسن مجازاة يوسف أخوته وصبره على أذاهم عند الالتقاء بهم عن ذكر ما تعاطوه معه وكرمه في العفو عنهم حيث قال لا تثريب عليكم اليوم يغفر الله لكم وقيل لأن فيها ذكر الأنبياء والصالحين والملائكة والشياطين والجن والأنس والأنعام والطير وسير الملوك والمماليك والعلماء والتجار والفقلاء وحال الرجال والنساء ومكرهين وحيلهن وفيها أيضاً ذكر العفة والتوحيد وعلم السير وتعبير الرؤيا وآداب السياسة والمعاشرة وتدبير المعاشر فصارت أحسن القصص لما فيها من المعاني الجزيلة والفوائد الجليلة التي تصلح للدين والدنيا. وفي هذا الكتيب التي بين أيدينا تفسير لوسة يوسف عليه الصلاة والسلام وفيه أيضاً ذكر لنسبه عليه الصلاة والسلام، وذكر لصفاته وحليته.
