إن الخروج الفلسطيني من بلادهم ينطوي على مأساة إنسانية، إلى جانب كونه موضوعاً لمشادة تاريخية عن سبب ذلك الخروج. ولهذا السبب بادر الباحث ميخائيل بالمبو في كتابه هذا إلى الاستناد إلى ذكريات بعض اللاجئين الفلسطينيين لمتابعة السبب الحقيقي وراء هذا النزوح.
فالمذكرات الفلسطينية هذه تمتاز بدقة متماسكة والتي تيقن منها الباحث بعد مقارنتها مع المصادر الأميركية والإسرائيلية والبريطانية ومصادر الأمم المتحدة وسواهما من المصادر غير العربية. ويقول بأن الفلاحين العربي، بثقافتهم المحدودة، هؤلاء الذين جرت مقابلتهم بعد مضي سنوات على الأحداث، استطاعوا استعادة وقائع وحقائق تثبتها وثائق المحفوظات التي صارت مؤخراً في متناول الباحثين.
كما أنه وجد ومن خلال استيضاحه عن أسباب هذا النزوح من بعض الإسرائيليين إثبات لصحة الشهادة التي أدلى بها عدد من هؤلاء الإسرائيليين الذين تحدثوا بصدق عن طرد العرب عام 1948هـ.
