تدور أحداث الرواية في أجواء الجريمة الغامضة بطلها رمزي أونال كان في أيام عزه طياراً في الخطوط الجوية التركية، وعندما تم طرده، انتقل للعمل كمتحرٍ خاص ليكسب عيشه. ولكن هذه المهنة لم تكن فعلاً موجودة في تركيا بعد، لذا كان أونال يتجنب الشرطة كما يتجنبها موكلوه. وفي مهمته الأولى للبحث عن طالب جامعي مختفٍ يضطر للتعامل مع جثة، ويُجبر على استخدام مهاراته في رياضة الأيكيدو، بالإضافة إلى قيامه بنقل لطرود لا يعرف محتواها! ولكن عندما يبدأ في إيجاد الخيط الأول لاختفاء الطالب الجامعي سوف يجد أونال نفسه وسط جريمة أخرى مضطر أن يفك لغزها لتكتمل مهمته. وفي تلك اللحظة أيقن أونال بحدس متحرٍ خاص أن هناك شيئاً ناقصاً لا بد أن يظهر كما يحدث في الروايات.
