صدرت رواية " المزدوج " ، العمل الثاني لدوستويفكسي ، أوائل عام 1846 أي أياماً فقط بعد النجاح الكبير الذي حققته رواية " الفقراء " . ويطرح هذا الكتاب موضوع الجنون ، وهو أحد المواضيع الأثيرة لدى دوستويفسكي في رواياته الكبرى اللاحقة .
تصور لنا هذه الرواية الصراع الداخلي الذي يعتمل في نفس ياكوف بتروفيتش غوليادكين ، موظف في إحدى إدارات مدينة بطرسبورغ انقلبت حياته رأساً على عقب عند ظهور شخص يشبهه تماماً ، ويكيد له ويحتل شيئاً فشيئاً مكانته في العمل والمنزل ، إلى أن يدفع بحياته إلى الإنهيار التام . ولعلّ أهم ما أثّر في السيد غوليادكين وأثار دهشته أن الناس من حوله ، وعلى رأسهم رئيسه في العمل وخادمه بتروشكا ، لم يبدُ عليهم أنهم صُدموا بظهور هذا الشبيه ، واعتبروه مجرد رجل يشبهه وعاملوه على هذا الأساس .
إن اعتماد دوستويفسكي على تقنية الحوار الداخلي بشكل مكثّف في هذه الرواية مكّنه من أن يسبر أغوار شخصية بطله ، وأن يتغلغل في نفسيته التي غيّرها دخول هذا الآخر ، مكرّساً بذلك عبقريته في تحليل النفس الإنسانية ، حيث قال عنه نيتشه : " دوستويفسكي هو الكاتب الوحيد الذي تعلمت منه شيئاً من علم النفس " .
على الرغم من أن رواية " المزدوج " ليست من أعمال دوستويفكسي الأكثر شهرة ، إلا أنها تعتبر الحجر الأساس في أسلوبه المتفرّد ، حتى أن فلاديمير نابوكوف قال أنها " أعظم كتاب كتبه دوستويفكسي " .
