يختلف هذا الكتاب عن كتب المؤرّخين المعتادة، فهو لا يسعى إلى الإضافة من خلال اعتماد مصادر لم يسبق لغيره اعتمادها، أو تقديم مقاربة جديدة بإمكانها تعديل، أو حتى قلب، ما هو متداوَل ومعروف لدى المختصّين في التاريخ أو العلوم الانسانية بشكل عام. ومن هذا المنطلَق يمكن القول إن هذا الكتاب يبقى بيداغوجياً بحتاً، وذلك لأنه موجّه للدارسين أساساً. ولأن موضوعه يقوم على رسم منهجيّة تمكّن من "ضبط" طُرُق التعامل مع مصادر السيرة النبويّة المنتمية إلى فترة الإسلام المبكر التي يشوبها، حسب الدارسين، الكثير من الغموض والضبابية. هذا إلى جانب انتماء هذه المصادر إلى عالم المقدّس لاهتمامها بشخص النبي. من هنا جاءت صعوبة التعامل مع هذه المصادر بالنسبة للدارسين وطلبة العلم خاصة، وهذا الأمر هو الذي دفعنا لتأليف هذا الكتاب بهدف بيداغوخي منهجي وليس بهدف الإضافة للمعرفة التاريخية بشأن سيرة النبي محمد.
