ينطلق هذا الكتاب من التجارب الحقيقيّة الّتي عاشها المؤلّف مع الآخر الغربيّ، وضمنه الأمريكيّ، ولكنّه لا يتوقّف عند حدودها بالطبع، وهي التجارب التي عانى في قسم منها، كما هي حال كلّ عربي، من الإستعمار والعدوان ومواقف الغرب الّتي يغلب عليها العداء للعرب؛ وتعايش في قسم آخر منها مع الغرب والغربيّين معيشةً ودراسةً ورحلاتٍ وصداقات، وأفاد منها.
فقد أفرزت له هذه التجارب، بقسميها، رؤية للغرب يمكن أن نصفها بالمزدوجة، وربّما المتناقضة، قدّمت له الغرب عدواً أو معتدياً أو على الأقل ليس صديقاً من جهة، وصديقاً ومفيداً أو على الأقلّ محايداً من جهة أخرى؛ فمن هذه الرؤية دخل عالم البحث في هذا الجانب.
ولأنّ الوعاء الأكثر غنًى خارج نفس الإنسان ذاته، تعلقاً باصطراع رؤية كهذه في داخله، كان الأدب، ولإهتمامه بالدراسات الأدبيّة المقارنة عموماً، وبموضوعة الآخر الغربيّ.
انطلق المؤلّف في دراسة سابقة له صدرت عن المؤسّسة العربيّة بعنوان "نحن والآخر في الرواية العربيّة المعاصرة"، عُني فيها بتقديم الغرب وعلاقة العرب به كما تمثّلتها الرواية العربيّة، لتأتي هذه الدراسة إمتداداً لتلك، لكنه يسعى فيها لتقديم أشكالٍ من صورة أمريكا والأمريكيّ كما قُدّمت تحديداً في الرواية العربيّة، وبشكل خاصّ خلال العقود الثلاثة الأخيرة.
