إذا كان الأدباء في العصر الحديث قد تمثلوا اللقاء بين الشرق ممثَلاً غالباً بالعرب، والغرب ممثلاً بشكل خاص بأوروبا، فإن الروائيين كانو أكثر هؤلاء الأدباء فعلاً لذلك، بالرغم من حداثة الفن الروائي في الأدب العربي، مقارنة بالشعر مثلاً... صحيح أن الأدباء عموماً، كما عرفناهم دائماً، يهتمون بالعالم والناس من حولهم، حين يكتبون أعمالهم الأدبية لينعكس ذلك بشكل ما في هذه الأعمال، إلا أن الروائي هو أكثرهم عنايةً بتقديم الوقائع، أو ربما جاز لنا القول روح الواقع... فالرواية إذ تعنى بالناس والحياة التي يراها الروائي أن يخبرها أو يجد نفسه فيها، فإنها لن تكون في كل الأحوال صورةً لذلك. وإذا ما بدونا هنا ما يشيه الإشكالية المنهجية والنقدية، ونحن نقدم صورة الغرب ضمن بحثنا في (نحن والآخر الغربي) تحديداً في الرواية العربية، فإننا نقول إن طبيعة العلاقة بين الرواية والواقع تتيح لنا أن ترى، ضمن ما نراه فيها من ناس وحياة، صورة هي، بدرجةٍ ما، تمثل الواقع. من هنا تأتي أهمية صور العلاقة ما بين الشرق والغرب كما تمثيلها الرواية العربية، التي تتناولها هذه الدراسة وتحديداً خلال العقود الثلاثة أو الأربعة الأخيرة.
