أصبحت ظاهرة السحر إلى جانب ظاهرات غيبية أخرى محور علم جيد يطلق عليه ما وراء النفس ونحن كباحثي علم الاجتماع ليس علينا أن نحكم على الظواهر ونقيمها وإنما علينا تقرير الحقائق المتعلقة بها وتحليلها وتفسيرها لذلك فإن أي مؤلف علمي يبدأ بالحكم عليها بأنها من قبيل الدجل أو الأساطير يصبح غير علمي لأنه وقع في خطأ حكم مسبق على هذه الظواهر. وعلاقة الناس بالسحر علاقة قديمة جدًا ترجع في قدمها إلى الأيام الأولى التي وجد فيها على وجه الأرض حين انتابه المخاوف من ظلمة الليل ومن وحشة الأماكن ومن قسوة الطبيعة وصراع من أجل البقاء كما أن السحر قديم قدم الأطماع البشرية المتمثلة في الغيرة والحسد وحب السيطرة والانتقال والجديد في هذا الكتاب هو المعالجة الاجتماعية الثقافية لظاهرة السحر الغيبية وهو اجتهاد مستحدث في المكتبة العربية يختلف عن الاجتهادات التقليدية الأخرى سواء التاريخي منها أو الديني أو الأنثروبولوجي وإن لم يغفل أيًا من هذه الأبعاد.
والواقع أن ميدان الناس والسحر، يشهد المزيد من الممارسين المتخصصين، والمترددين عليهم وذلك كما تدلنا الإحصاءات المعاصرة في واقع بعض الدراسات، وكما تنبئنا وسائل الإعلام المختلفة من مقروءة، ومسموعة، ومرئية، وقد يظن البعض أن هذا الميدان ينحصر شيئًا فشيئًا، بحكم منطق التعبير والتنمية، وزيادة الوعي، لكن الأمر في حقيقته غير ذلك. الكتاب يشتمل على جهد متميز، مخلص لدراسة السحر، وعلى بحث ميداني في مدينة القاهرة عن المشتغلين بالسحر، والمترددين عليهم، وبه أول خريطة سحرية، وهو يعطينا صورة لما وصلت إليه هذه الظواهر حتى الآن.
