إن عقيدة المسيح المنتظر كانت قد سيطرت على العقيدة اليهودية فى جميع مراحلها التاريخية, فأطلق هذا اللقب على قورش ملك بلاد فارس رغم وثنيته لا لشئ إلا أنه كان قد حرر اليهود من سبيهم, وفى عصرنا الحديث نرى من اليهود من حاول أن يفسر كل ظاهرة سياسية, أو اجتماعية, أو دينية, أو حتى علمية كاكتشاف الموجات الكهرومغناطيسية والراديو بأنه دليل مادى محسوس على قرب قدوم المسيح المخلص, لأن الأرض بهذه المكتشفات أصبحت تمتلئ باسم "يهوه" إله اليهود.
وحينما كان يلح على اليهودى الشعور بتأخر مجئ هذا المسيح فإنه كان يتألم لذلك, ويستعجل هذه العودة المرتقبة, ويسجل هذه الرغبة الحميمة فى طلب مجئ المسيح سواء فى دعواته, خاصة عند تأدية الصلاة, أو فى مؤلفاته إن كان يعمل بالتأليف, أو حتى فى شعره, فيقول عنموئيل بن شلوموه "ت 1360م". فى قصيدة "أنشودة الذهب":
أسرع يامسيح الرب لماذا تتلكأ
هاهنا تنتظرك الدموع المسكوبة
المشتتون فى الوديان يسكبون الدماء
كل قلب ينتظرك, وكل لسان يرغب فيك
تحرك يا مسيحنا إإت إلينا
راكبا حصانا يعدو بسرجه المطهم
وهكذا نرى مدى الشوق الذى كان يكنه اليهود لمجئ المسيح المرتقب, مما يدفعنا لمحاولة تلمس الإشارة إليه فى العهد القديم, وكذلك العهد الجديد, لبيان موقف اليهود والنصارى من هذه الفكرة الأسطورية.
