ينقل ابن إسحاق أن عدي بن حاتم الطائي كان قبل إسلامه "ركوسياً"، وفسَّر بعض العلماء من معاصري ابن إسحاق الركوسية بأنها دينٌ بين دين النصارى والصابئين.
ومن الثابت أن الصابئين المعنيين ليسوا الماندائيين أو الحرنانيين بل أهل دين يبدو للمراقب الخارجي واقعاً على هامش اليهودية وطرف المسيحية من غير أن يكون اليهودية أو المسيحية.
من هنا السؤال الذي لم نجد له جواباً فيما بين أيدينا من الأبحاث التي تناولت الوضع الديني في الحجاز عشية ظهور الإسلام: ما هي هذه الشيعة الركوسية؟ وما الذي كان يمكن أن يكون مشتركاً بين معتقدات الركوسيين ومعتقدات المسيحيين من جهة ومعتقدات الصابئين من جهة أخرى؟... وأين عرف عدي بن حاتم هذه النحلة؟...
كان هذا الأخير يقيم في جبل أجأ أحد جبلي قبيلة طيء، فإن كان قد التقى بالركوسية فذلك كان حتماً في مكانٍ ما في التخوم التي تفصل / تصل شمال الحجاز بالجنوب الفلسطيني أي في الضاحية العربية - البيزنطية.
