على النقيض من الصورة التي يطرحها الكتاب الشعبيون لـ"أخناتون"، عاشر فراعنة الأسرة الثامنة عشرة من المملكة الحديثة في مصر القديمة، كشخصية رومانسية عاشقة للسلام، أشبه بالسيد المسيح، فإن البروفيسور "دونالد ريدفورد" رئيس قسم الدراسات الشرقية بجامعة "تورونتو" في كندا يخرج علينا في هذا الكتاب كي يقدم لنا "أخناتون" أو "أمين- حوتب" الرابع كما عرفه التاريخ. وفي هذا الإطار يقودنا البروفيسور "ريدفورد" خلال الكتابات والرسومات التي كشف عنها النقاب، على كتل "التلاتات" التي بُنيت بها المعابد الأربعة التي شيدها "أخناتون"، وهدمتها حقبة الإصلاح التي جاءت عقب انتهاء عصر "أخيتاتون" عاصمة مصر خلال تلك الحقبة، إلى معومات جديدة لم يتوصل إليها عالم قبله واستناداً إليها لا يجد البروفيسور مفراً من أن يُقرر أن "أخناتون" كان أول من بذر- عبر "الأتونية" بوحدانيتها الصارمة التي دعا بها وإليها- بذرة التكفير في العقل البشري.
ولكن "الأتونية" تظل مع ذلك مصرية خالصة، على نحو ما يوضحه الفصل الذي كتبه المترجم، وقدم به للكتاب، وذلك نظير "الموسوية" أو اليهودية التي تأسست فيما نعرف من علماء المصريات بدءاً من "جيمس هنري بريستيد" على "الأتونية" المصرية، إلا أنها امتصت، مع ذلك، التقاليد السامية، كي تدرجها في صميم ديانة الساميين وهو الأمر الذي يقوم كفارق جذري بين هذه وتلك، ويجعل من القول الذي قد يشبه الأمر وكأن "بضاعتنا رُدت إلينا"، قولاً غير دقيق وسياحياً، لا يتوقف إلا عند سطح الأشياء، وبالتالي يسق ما ينبني عليه من أقوال مرسلة من قبيل: نحن أولى بها منهم.
