يبحث علم الأصول عن الأدلة الإجمالية والقواعد الأصولية للدين من هذه الأدلة وإثباتها للأحكام. وكتاب الحافظ صلاح الدين أبي سعيد الدمشقي الذي سماه تلقيح المفهوم في تنقيح صيغ العموم، يبحث فيه عن دليل من أدلة الشره وهذا الدليل هو باب من أبواب علم الأصول، وقد جاء هذا الكتاب قيماً في مبناه ومعناه وأدرج فيه الكثير من المسائل والموضوعات التي تنتمي إلى هذا الموضوع.
وقد حصر المؤلف موضوع بحثه في بابين: الباب الأول: في تحرير مذاهب العلماء في إثبات صيغ العموم ونفيها وما استدل به لكل قوم من ذلك، الباب الثاني: في تفاصيل صيغ العموم والكلام على كل واحدة منها. ويشتمل الباب الأول على مقدمة وفصلين. قسم في المقدمة العموم إلى قسمين، عموم الشمول وعموم الصلاحية، وعقد مقارنة بينها.
أما الفصل الأول فدار حول مسالة اختلاف العلماء في أصل صيغ العموم على الجملة وانتقل في الفصل الثاني إلى الاستدلال على عدة من صيغ العموم بمفردها على حدة. أما الباب الثاني فموضوعه هو الكلام على تفاصيل صيغ العموم والكلام على كل واحدة منها بالتفصيل، وقد تكلم في الفصل الأول من الباب الثاني عن بقة صيغ العموم وما يقتضيه النظر من الحكم عليها بالاستغراق ونفيه. الفصل الثاني وتكلم فيه العلائي عن أنواع صيغ العموم في رأيه ورأي القوافي، وفي الفصل الثالث عقد فصلاً عن نوع آخر من صيغ العموم وهو المشترك اللفظي، أما الفصل الرابع فعقد فيه فصلاً لما ألحق بصيغ العموم وهو ترك الاستقصال ووقائع الأعيان.
