في هذا الكتاب يسلط أ.د. فاروق صالح العمر الضوء على مجلة (الجنان). والجنان مجلة عربية نصف شهرية صدرت في بيروت خلال الحقبة الواقعة بين عامي 1870-1886، مؤسس المجلة ورئيس تحريرها بطرس البستاني الذي قال فيها:
إليك صحيفة نشرت حديثاً / فأغنت بالسماع من العيان ، كفردوس حوى ثمراً شهياً / لذاك دعوتها باسم "الجنان".
كان شعار المجلة "حب الوطن من الإيمان" وبقي هذا الشعار إلى الوقت الذي توقفت عن الصدور. ولأن "الجنان" هي من المجلات العربية المهمة في مرحلة التأسيس أفرد المؤلف الأبعاد الكاملة لها، من آراء وقضايا تؤرخ لتلك المرحلة الطويلة والتي استمرت وفقاً للمؤلف "حوالي ست عشرة سنة، وما تخللت هذه الفترة من حوادث عربية ودولية مهمة". لذلك يمكن القول أن المجلة مرت بحقبتين مختلفتين من حيث طرح المواضيع: "الحقبة الأولى" الممتدة من (1870-1880) وكانت تمتاز بالدراسات العامة والمقالات الإفتتاحية حول وجوب الإصلاح والإهتمام بالشخصية العربية وما طرأ عليها من انحدار خلال الفترة العثمانية. أما "الحقبة الثانية" فتمتد من (1881-1886) وخلال هذه الفترة اتجهت المجلة نحو المنطقة العربية والمشكلات التي حدثت فيها؛ ومن ذلك احتلال فرنسا لتونس واحتلال الإنكليز لمصر ومشكلات السودان وحركات اليمن وغيرها من المواضيع. من هنا أفرد المؤلف مكاناً خاصاً لمصر بخاصة في فترة الخديوي توفيق وهي فترة (الحركة العرابية) ورأي المجلة فيها، وعلى القرار نفسه خصص فصلاً مستقلاً لدراسة أحداث السودان أيام الحركة المهدية وأسبابها ودواعيها وخطابها ورأي المجلة فيها. وختم المجلة بوثائق أرشيفية مصورة من مجلة الجنان.
