يتخذ هذا الكتاب ملمحا نظريا خاصا به فلم يقف عند سرد الحقائق والنتائج الإمبريقية المتراكمة التى كشفت عنها البحوث والدراسات الارتقائية بل امتد ليقدم بعض التفسيرات النرظية الخاصة بهذه الحقائق وينعكس ذلك فى تبنى الكتاب لإخدى القضايا الجدلية فى علم النفس الارتقائى وهى قضية الوراثة والبيئة محاولا الكشف عما تساهم به كل ناحية أخرى فى تفسير التغيرات التى تطرا على كل مظهر من مظاهر النمو عبر العمر عولجت موضوعات الكتاب فى ثمانية فصول تناول الفصل الأول منها موضوعات خاصة بأساسيات النمو والارتقاء من حيث تعريف العلم أهميته تاريخه مناهج وأساليب البحث الخاصة به والاتقاء أما فصول الكتاب – ابتداء من الفصل الثالث حتى الفصل السابع فيتم فيها شرح وتفسري عمليات النمو التى يمر بها الطفل عبر مراحل عرمه المختلفة فيتناول الفصل الثالث النمو الجسمى والحركى ويتناول الفصل الرابع نمو الاحساس والادراك ويتناول الفصل الخامس النمو اللغوى ويتناول الفصل السادس النمو المعرفي أما الفصل السابع فيختص بكل من النمو الاجتماعى والانفعالى على حين يعكس الفصل الثامن والأخير الاهتمامات النظرية الخاصة بعلم النفس الاتقائى حيث يتناول بعض القضايا الجدلية والنظرية فى هذا العلم كما يعرض بالتفصيل لعدد من النظيريات المتخصصة والحديثة نسبيا فى مجال علم النفس الارتقائى
