تأسست الدولة السعودية الأولى، في العام 1157هـ / 1744م أي منذ (مائتين وخمس وستين سنة) والدولة السعودية القائمة الآن وهي ما يتفق المؤرخون على إعتبارها الدولة السعودية الثالثة التي قامت سنة 1319هــ/ 1902م، وأعلن توحيدها في هذا الكيان الحالي (المملكة العربية السعودية) عام 1351هـ/ 1932م.
هي الوريث التاريخي للدولة السعودية الأولى؛ موضوع هذا الكتاب، أما هذا الكتاب؛ فقد فضل مؤلفه أن يُسميه (محاضرات في تاريخ الدولة السعودية الأولى) لإن مادته في معظمها كانت محاضرات ألقاها على طلبة السنوات النهائية في الجامعة، وحينما أراد المؤلف أن تصدر هذه المحاضرات في مؤلف مطبوع، عمد إلى التوسع المركز، وإلى توثيق مادته التي اعتمد فيها على مصادر أساسية، أهمها الوثائق والتقارير الحكومية الرسميّة، ولهذا فإن السمة الأساسية لهذا الكتاب، هي الجانب السياسي، وإطارها المنهجي، أكاديمي بحثي تحليلي.
ومؤلف هذا الكتاب، أستاذ جامعي، ظل يُدرّس تاريخ هذه البلاد كجزء من تاريخ العرب الحديث، أكثر من ربع قرن، حفلت حياته الأكاديمية والعلمية بالعديد من الأبحاث والدراسات التي ظهر معظمها في مؤلفات هامة وبارزة في هذا الموضوع، كما حفلت حياته بالعديد من الرحلات العلمية في أنحاء هذه المعمورة، بحثاً عن مواد تخصصه في دور وثائقها ومكتباتها، وأرشيفاتها الوطنية، فجمع مواداً هي قناته ومادته فيما يُدرّسه، وما يكتبه.
