يعتبر هذا الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته، ومنذ ظهوره وحتى الآن، الكتاب الأكثر توثيقاً وبالتالي أهمية، لتاريخ العربية السعودية، حيث يعرض فيه المؤلف وبالتفصيل مختلف مراحل تكون الدولة وتطورها، مستنداً في ذلك إلى جهد توثيقي ضخم يغطي أكثر من 170 صفحة تحوي أكثر من 1700 هامش توثيقي. وفي هذه الطبعة الجديدة المنقحة والمزيدة، يتابع المؤلف رصد الأحداث التوقعات في العربية السعودية انطلاقاً من التغييرات التي حدثت على الصعيد العالمي خلال الثمانينات والتسعينات.
وقد تناول الأحداث حتى بداية التسعينات، حيث عاد الاستقرار إلى المملكة بعد هزات حرب الخليج، ولعل مرحلة التسعينات تشكل ميداناً للبحث أمام الاقتصاديين وعلماء الاجتماع والساسة والصحفيين أوسع منه أمام المؤرخين، وذلك لأن أحداث الأعوام الأخيرة لم تترسب ولم تتبلور بالقدر الكافي لبحث تاريخي صرف.
وقد اعتمد المؤلف في إعداد هذا الكتاب على عدة مجموعات من المصادر، وفي مقدمتها مصنفات تاريخية عربية وصفها مؤلفون من أنصار آل سعود والوهابية وكذلك مؤلفون معادون لهم ومراقبون محايدون.
