في هذا الكتاب يحكي " شريف حتاتة" حياته منذ أن ولد في "لندن" من أم إنجليزية فقيرة وأب مصري كان ينتمي إلى أسرة إقطاعية، ثم بعد مجيئه إلى الوطن ليستقر في بيت جده ، فيجعلنا نعيش معه طفلا يكتشف عالما غريبا عليه ، وتلميذا في المدرسية الإرسالية، وطالبا في كلية الطب. وطبيبا في المستشفى الجامعي، ومشاركا في الحريكة الوطنية ضد الإنجليز والملك فاروق، وعضوا في حركة يسارية يصبح فيها محترفا سياسيا ويرحل إلى مدينة الإسكندرية، ومسجونا يهرب من سجنه ويسافر في قاع سفينه للشحن، ولاجئا في "باريس" يقع في حب إمرأة زائرة جاءت من مصر. نعود معه للوطن سرا بعد ثورة يوليو حيث يستأنف نشاطه السياسي في قرى الوجه البحري إلى أن يقبض عليه مرة أخرى، ويصدر عليه حكما بالأشغال الشاقة لمدة عشر سنوات نقصيها معه في السجن الحربي وليمان طره وسجن مصر وعندما يفرج عنه يعين في وزارة الصحة في أدنى الدرجات لكن هناك يلتقي بالكاتبة نوال السعداوي لتتخذ حياته مسارا جديدا ينقله إلى الكتابة الروائية إلى المشاركة في العمل من أجل حقوق النساء ، إلى جانب المعارك الأخرى التى يخوضانها معا فيعيشان حياة أسرية جديدة ويتعرضان لقهر السلطات وتهديدات التيارات الدينية الأصولية مما يرغمهما على ترك البلاد والتدريس في عدد من الجامعات بالخارج. "النوافد المفتوحة" سيرة مكتوبة بقلم روائي يتوغل في نفسه ، في علاقاته بالآخرين في لحظات القوة ولحظات الضعف مازجا بين الخاص والعام كاشفا تفاصيلا للحياة بإسلوب فيه رقة الفنان وقسوة المنقب عن حقيقة الأشياء.
