شريف حتاتة مواليد 9/13 /1923 هو طبيب وكاتب وروائي ماركسي وعضو الأمانه العامه بحزب التحالف الشعبى الاشتراكي، كان متزوج من الدكتورة نوال السعداوي، متزوج الآن من الكاتبة والناقدة السينمائية أمل الجمل.

في هذا الكتاب يحكي "شريف حتاتة" حياته منذ أن ولد في "لندن" من أم إنجليزية فقيرة وأب مصري كان ينتمي إلى أسرة إقطاعية. ثم بعد مجيئه إلى الوطن ليستقر في بيت جده. فيجعلنا نعيش معه طفلاً يكتشف عالماً غريباً عليه, وتلميذاً في المدرسة الإرسالية, وطالباً في كلية الطب وطبيباً في المستشفى الجامعي, ومشاركاً في الحركة الوطنية ضد الإنجليز والملك فاروق, وعضواً في حركة يسارية يصبح فيها محترفاً سياسياً ويرحل إلى مدينة الإسكندرية, ومسجوناً يهرب من سجنه ويسافر في قاع سفينة للشحن, ولاجئاً في "باريس" يقع في حب امرأة زائرة جاءت من مصر.
نعود معه إلى الوطن سراً بعد ثورة يوليو؛ حيث يستأنف نشاطه السياسي في قرى الوجه البحري إلى أن يقبض عليه مرة أخرى ويصدر عليه حكم بالأشغال الشاقة لمدة عشر سنوات نقضيها معه في السجن الحربي, وليمان طرة, وسجن مصر, ثم تتخذ حياته مساراً جديداً ينقله إلى الكتابة الروائية.
