لا شك أن مسألة السلطة في البلدان العربية لا تنفك عن إنتاج الإستبداد والإستبعاد وانتهاك حقوق الإنسان، وأيّاً كانت طبيعة السلطة، ديكتاتورية أم ديمقراطية، لم تشكل إلى الآن نقلة في حياة البشر. وإزاء هذا التسلط ينطلق الكاتب والشاعر العراقي عبد الزهرة زكي في كتابه (واقف في الظلام) من تجربته الشخصية أثناء اعتقاله من قِبل المخابرات العراقية في عهد النظام العراقي الأسبق، وبالتحديد في آخر عهده (2003)، "حقيقة لم استطع الفكاك، نفسياً على الأقل، من أيام الحبس، أيام (الحاكمية) سجن المخابرات الذي سيجد القارىء .. أني قلت عنه في هذا الكتاب: ما زلت يوماً أمر ببنايته (سجن الحاكمية) ولا أستطيع إلا أن ألتفت باتجاه تلك البناية التي تختصرها ذاكرتي بكل طبقاتها إلى مجرد زنزانة وغرفة تحقيق وقبو تعذيب، وهي الأماكن التي تشكل تلك الذاكرة عن هذا السجن وعن بنايته التي ما يزال يؤلمني أنها بقيت حتى الآن مكاناً أميناً ...". لا يكتفي المؤلف في حديثه بتصوير عملية الإعتقال، بل يحولها "إلى مسؤولية، مسؤولية الإيمان العميق بالحرية وقيمتها وبحفظ الكرامة الإنسانية ..."، وهو في هذا يوجه نداءه إلى مثقفي عصره أن تحركوا ولو بالقلم، "على أن لا نسمح للسلطات بارتكاب (أخطاء) يذهب ضحيتها الناس، وتُسحق حرياتهم وكراماتهم ...".
وبالإنتقال إلى مضمون الكتاب أكثر، نجد المؤلف يقدم صورة عن الظروف التي انتظر فيها العراقيون الحرب التي أطاحت بالنظام الأسبق (عهد صدام) وتسببت بدخول قوات الإحتلال الأميركي إلى بلادهم والإنتهاكات الكبيرة التي رافقت الإحتلال، كما يقدم المؤلف تصوراته عن عهد ما بعد الإحتلال، مستخدماً تقنيات تتراوح بين سرد الأحداث والوقائع سرداً روائياً وبين التحليل والتقويم والنقد، فما حدث ويحدث الآن من فنون الرعب، وصناعة التعذيب، والقتل، داخل السجون أم خارجها، يسجل نهاية الإنسان الروحاني بآخر لا يقل وحشية عن حيوانات الغابة، وفي عالمنا العربي أكثر من مشهد.
