هذا الكتاب هو الجزء الثاني لعمل "مارسيل غوشيه" عن "الثورة الحديثة"، في الجزء الأول كان "غوشيه" قد حلل "زوال سحر العالم" خلال القرون الأربعة الماضيات، كمقدمة لنشوء العصر الحديث بعقلانيته وديمقراطيته وإقتصاده الصناعي.
في هذا الجزء المتمم، يمضي المؤلف في رحلة التفكيك التاريخي ليميط اللثام عن الثغرات وفجوات "العقلانية الحديثة"، في السياسة كما في الإقتصاد، في "أكاذيب التقدم" أو "مجاهيل المستقبل"، التي تفجرت بين أعوام 1880 و1914، لتنتهي بإنهيار المثال الليبرالي وصعود التوتاليتارية.
لهذه الأزمة معناها العالمي، لكن تمثلاتها الأوروبية المعترضة أطلقت إستجابات فكرية وسياسية وإقتصادية جديدة، أما التمثلات في المنطقة العربية فما تزال تعيد إنتاج الماضي؛ هذا إذن مقاربة جديدة لأزمة الديمقراطية وإمكان تجاوزها.
