يعرض المؤلفون الظروف التي تُحيط بعملية التربية والتعليم، التي يُعاد النظر فيها في مجتمعاتنا من جديد، ويطرحون الصعوبات والعقبات التي تواجه عملية التربية والتعليم، وضرورة التنبّه إلى مهمّة إعادة التأسيس وأبعادها. تتوزّع موضوعات الكتاب على أربعة محاور رئيسة: يتركّز المحور الأول على الدور التقليدي للأسرة ودورها في تربية الفرد على الحرية وتثقيفه. ويدور المحور الثاني حول المعارف الخالية من المعنى،إذ لا تزال مسألة المعنى منذ عقدين أحد أقوى وأشدّ عوامل تطوّر المسألة المدرسية، عبر ما أثارته من بلبلة وارتباك حول ما يناسب التعليم وطريقة التلقي. أما المحور الثالث فيناقش جدلية نهاية السلطة أم تحوّلها، وانتقاداتها ودواعيها وأسبابها ووظائفها. فيما يطرح المحور الرابع موضوع التربية من دون مجتمع، والمقصود بها تجربة الطفل، أي الحياة اليومية والمدرسية، والبرنامج الزمني للأنشطة الملموسة. ويرى المؤلفون أن الشروط التي تسمح بقيام عملية التربية والتعليم، أصبحت اليوم موضع مساءلة ومراجعة، وخصوصاً بعد أن تزعزعت جملة من المعطيات التي كانت تبدو بديهية، وكانت تشكّل الأساس في العملية التربوية والتعليمية. إنّ المسألة كلّها هي في إيضاح المفاعيل التي أحدثتها التحوّلات العميقة في مجتمعاتنا، وتبيان التحدّيات التي تطرحها الاستجابة لهذه التحوّلات على عملية التربية والتعليم. يذكر أنّ الكتاب هو من تأليف ثلاثة أكاديميين هم: مارسيل غوشيه مدير أبحاث ودراسات في معهد الدراسات المعمّقة في العلوم الاجتماعية، وماري كلود بليه أستاذة محاضرة في جامعة روان، ودومينيك أوتافي أستاذ في جامعة كان.
