إنَّ ملامح صورة الكندي، كما رسمها له مؤرِّخو الفكر العربي والتي تكرَّست مع الزمن كمقولة مقبولة عموماً - هي صورة "فيلسوف العرب" الأوَّل، ومنشئ الكثير من ركائز الفلسفة العربية ومصطلحاتها ومواضيعها، وإن بشكلها البادئ أحياناً.
هذا الكتاب، الذي اعتمد منهجيَّة الدراسة التاريخية الفلسفية، يكشف جوانب متعلقة بالكندي، وتالياً بنشأة الفلسفة العربية، من خلال مواقف المؤرِّخين والدّارسين، لم يسبق أن وُضعت تحت الأضواء، أو عولجت بهذا الأسلوب المنهجي، كما يبيِّن أن المكانة التي أفردها المؤرخون والدّارسون للكندي تبدو "ضرورة تأريخية" اقتضتها متطلبات تأريخ إنطلاقة الفلسفة العربيَّة، وإنَّ مقولة "أثره الكندي في الفلاسفة اللاحقين ليست أكثر من "فرضية". لا تسوِّغها أدلة واضحة... كل ذلك وليد فكر تأريخي إستنباطي، لا إستقرائي، بالغ بإستنتاجاته إنطلاقاً من فرضيّة "الكندي الأوَّل"، غير الواضحة، التي نُعت بها الفيلسوف، والتي بالغت يتجاوز "العائق المعرفي" المتمثِّل بضعف الوثائق عن سيرته، ومصادر فكره، ونتاجه المتعدّد المواضيع، والملامح الثقافية لعصره.
هذا الكتاب، بمنهجيَّته الصارمة المستندة إلى الوثائق والنصوص القليلة المعروفة العائدة للكندي، وبإعتماده المقارنة الدقيقة والغنيَّة بين الأحكام المطلقة عليه، يقدِّم معطيات أوَّلية جديدة في غاية الأهميَّة، ولا غنى عنها، كفيلة بإعادة النظر بالموقف من الكندي، وبكثير من القناعات المتعلقة بإنطلاقة الفلسفة العربيَّة في الإسلام.
