يعود السبب في قلة الدراسات التي تتناول الكندي بشكل موسع إلى كون معظم مؤلفاته قد فقدت. ولم يعرف منها إلا الحد الضئيل، ورغم قلة المصادر والوثائق التي تشير إلى الكندي فإن ذلك لم يقف حائلاً أمام تأريخ سيرته الذاتية والفكرية "كاملة". ومن هنا فإن أحداً من مؤرخي الفلسفة لم يتسنى له التعامل مع مصطلحات الكندي الأصلية كما استعملها هو بأسلوبه الكتابي إلا في ما ندر، خصوصاً وإن غالبية نصوص الكندي التي عمل عليها كانت نصوصاً لاتينية ومصطلحاتها لاتينية.
وقد عاد الاهتمام بالدراسات حول الكندي منذ منتصف القرن العشرين وبعدما تم نشر مجموعة كبيرة من الرسائل المنسوبة إلى الكندي والتي كانت تعتبر مفقودة.
وفي هذا الكتاب يعكف المؤلف على تحليل نصوص الكندي وتحليل المصطلحات التي تتألف منها هذه النصوص، فقام بفرز كل المصطلحات (الألفاظ) الموجودة في رسائل الكندي المنثورة رغم قلتها، وعمد إلى تدوين كل جملة وردت فيها وبصيغها المختلفة، وقام من ثم بالبحث أولاً عن معنى المصطلح في معاجم اللغة الأقرب إلى عصر الكندي، ثم قارن الجمل التي يرد فيها المصطلح، في مختلف الرسائل المنسوبة إلى الكندي، وعمد المصطلح نفسه. وقد توسع المؤلف في تحليل المصطلح بقدر ما يحتمل المصطلح من توسع من جهة.
إن هذا الكتاب يكشف عن وقائع جديدة يمكن الاستناد إليها لتعميق الدراسات اللاحقة عن الكندي خصوصاً، وعن نشأة المصطلحات الفلسفية العربية عامة، إذ إن البحث في تاريخية نشأة المصطلحات الفلسفية عند الكندي يعني البحث في نشأة المصطلحات الفلسفية العربية عموماً. يبقى من الضروري القول إن المؤلف قد اختار دراسة المصطلحات الأنطولوجية والإبستمولوجية دون سواها من مصطلحات الكندي.
