إن ما يقوله القديس آوغستينوس عن الزمن يسري بالدرجة نفسها على الحب. كلما قللنا من تفكيرنا به، تبدّى لنا أكثر بداهة؛ ولكن حالما نمعن التفكير فيه، نغوص في مطبخ الشيطان. وما يؤكد هذا الوضع الغريب حقيقة أن الإنسان كفنان منذ فجر التاريخ الحضاري والإنسان كشاعر منذ عهود أورفيوس لم تشغله سوى موضوعات معدودة مثل انشغاله بموضوع الحب وبهذا الإصرار. فالشعراء كما هو معروف لا يكتبون عما يعرفونه حق المعرفة، بل عما لا يعرفونه حق المعرفة، وهذا لأسباب هم أيضاً لا يعرفونها حق المعرفة، لكنهم يريدون بكل تأكيد أن يعرفوها حق المعرفة. إن حالة عدم المعرفة أو حالة (أنا – لا – أعرف – ما – يعنيه – هذا) هي الحافز الأساسي، الذي دفعهم للإمساك بالقلم أو الريشة أو القيثارة. (الغضب، الحزن، فيض العاطفة، المال وإلخ تأتي كلها بالدرجة الثانية). لو كان الوضع مغايراً، لما وجدت قصائد وروايات ومسرحيات، بل تصريحات وحسب.
يبدو أن ثمة غموضاً يلازم الحب، شيئاً لايتمكن الإنسان من معرفته بدقة، مثلما لا يستطيع شرحه إلا بصورة قاصرة. غيرأن هذا يسري بطبيعة الحال على الانفجار العظيم الأول أو على السؤال: كيف سيكون الطقس بعد أسبوعين؟ ورغم ذلك فإن نظرية الانفجار العظيم والتنبؤ بالأحوال الجوية لايحركان لدى الشعراء وجمهورهم مثلما يفعل أبسط ما يتصل بالحب. وبناء على ذلك هناك ما يلازم الحب أكثر من مجرد الغموض. من الجلي أن كل إنسان ينظرإلى الحب باعتباره مسالة شخصية خاصة وأهم مسائل وجوده، إلى حد أن خبير فيزياء الفضاء نفسه عند بحثه عن شريكة حياته لا يولي كبير اهتمام بنظرية نشوء الكون، ناهيك عن حالة الطقس.
